The study aimed to assess how leading energy providers in North America and Europe are planning grid modernization initiatives to support renewable integration and improve transmission reliability. The objective was to understand investment priorities, challenges in adopting smart grid technologies, and best practices for managing capacity expansion. Interviews were conducted with senior leaders from electric utilities, including Heads of Grid Operations, Chief Engineers, Transmission Planning Leads, and Directors of Renewable Integration. Participants represented utilities servicing both urban and rural regions, with diverse portfolios across wind, solar, hydro, and thermal energy generation.
The Insights Desk team executed a structured recruitment process through internal and external research networks to identify qualified experts with hands-on grid planning experience. After screening respondents based on tenure, project leadership experience, and exposure to smart grid deployment, one-on-one interviews of approximately sixty minutes were conducted. A semi-structured discussion guide ensured consistency across interviews while allowing deeper exploration into regional policy impacts, technology adoption, and digital monitoring solutions.
The study revealed how utilities are prioritizing digital monitoring, automated outage management, and transmission upgrades to support long-term decarbonization targets. Key insights highlighted investment drivers such as regulatory incentives, renewable intermittency challenges, and cost-efficiency gains from predictive maintenance. The findings will enable the client to better understand technology readiness across markets, evaluate partnership opportunities, and shape solution positioning for grid modernization initiatives.
